Tamil Nadu reports 37 new cases, Chennai adds 20

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 37 new cases to its Covid-19 registry on Tuesday. Chennai, the only district to report cases in two digits, added 20 cases as compared to 16 cases it reported on Monday. There were no deaths recorded; 64 patients were discharged, and 339 patients were on the active registry by the end of the day.

Eight other districts – Chengalpet, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Salem, Tiruvallur, Thiruvarur and Tiruppur – also reported a marginal increase of up to two new cases compared to their Monday tally. After Chennai, Chengalpet (4) reported the highest number of cases. While Tiruvallur and Coimbatore reported three new cases each, Nilgiris reported one new case. Twenty-eight of the 38 districts in the state reported no new cases of viral infection.

Of the 339 active cases, Chennai had 129 followed by 45 in Chengalpet and 26 in Coimbatore. All other districts had fewer than 15 new cases each. Eight districts – Ariyalur, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Karur, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram and Tenkasi – had no active cases of Covid-19.

Of the 339 active cases, 63 patients were admitted to hospitals. This included 10 patients in the ICU. In Chennai, there were 11 patients in the hospital and among them, three were in the ICU.

Meanwhile, 75,013 people including 37,005 in the 12-14 years and 7,705 in the 16-18 years age group took the vaccine.
