Tamil Nadu registers 1,140 new Covid cases, 17 deaths

CHENNAI: New cases in Tamil Nadu dropped to 1,140 on Saturday compared to 1,152 it had registered on Friday. At the end of day, after the state discharged 1,374 people from the Covid-19 registry, there were 13,280 people undergoing treatment for the viral infection.

Seventeen deaths reported on Saturday took the toll tally in the state to 36,004.

Two districts – Chennai (141) and Coimbatore (132) – continued reporting cases in three digits, although both these districts reported a drop from the number of cases they reported on Friday. Chennai reported 147 cases and Coimbatore reported 140 cases on Friday.

At least 14 districts in the state reported an increase in cases compared to their Friday tally. The sharpest increase in fresh cases were reported from Tirupur. New cases in Tirupur went up to 81 on Saturday from 67 on Friday. During the same time period cases in Tiruvarur rose to 31 from 20. Dozen other districts reported between seven and one case more than their Friday tally. However, 26 districts reported fewer than 25 cases on Saturday, and among them nine districts reported cases in single digits. Perambalur and Ramanathapuram reported one case, followed by Tenkasi (2), Tirupathur (3) and four cases each in Ariyalur and Theni.

Of the 17 deaths, there were three each from Coimbatore and Ariyalur, followed by two in Chengalpet. Nine districts --Chennai, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Dharmapuri, Mayiladuthurai, Sivaganga, Kallakurichi and Ranipet - reported one death each.
