Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission examinees suffer as suburban trains cancelled

CHENNAI: The cancellation of suburban trains on weekends inconvenienced several commuters dependent on trains in the western suburbs to travel to exam centres for TNPSC examinations.

Regular commuters said that railways were not coordinating with the state government and other agencies before deciding on line blocks for maintenance work. Railways continue to think that people do not travel on weekends.

There was a huge rush at Tiruvallur railway station where people waited for suburban trains to travel to examination centres and to other destinations in Chennai. But trains did not arrive. The platform was crowded and people had to select other modes of transport after waiting for trains.

M N Ravi, a commuter said that "I had to take my daughter to the examination centre near Kadambathur. We waited for the trains for a long time and then caught a bus. I saw around 10 people reaching late and arguing to get into the centre. If trains were available, we could have reached on time.

K Baskar, a frequent commuter and former member of divisional rail users consultative committee said the railways should consider the needs of commuters before deciding on line block and cancelling suburban services.

T Sadagopan, a consumer activist said that the railway should do the work at night when people may not be travelling.
