Tamil Nadu: Paattali Makkal Katchi opposes Mekedatu deliberation

TRICHY: The Tamil Nadu government should move the Supreme Court and get the deliberation on the Mekedatu dam project removed from the agenda of the scheduled meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said on Monday.

The PMK president cited the announcement of the CWMA to discuss the detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of a dam in the Cauvery at Mekedatu in its upcoming meeting on June 17. He said the decision was in violation of the final order of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal.

“It is also against the law and Tamil Nadu. They (CWMA) have no right to discuss the DPR of Mekedatu. Their job is to share the water between the states but they have no business to discuss whether to construct a dam or not,” Anbumani told the reporters in Trichy.

Reiterating that the Cauvery water remains the lifeline issue for the Tamil Nadu farmers, Anbumani said, “If Karnataka constructs a dam at Mekedatu, even a single drop of water will reach the tail-end areas. The storage capacity of Karnataka will become 210 tmcft while our storage capacity will be 93 tmcft.”
