Tamil Nadu: Man held for creating wife’s matrimonial ad

CHENNAI: The Tiruvallur police on Wednesday arrested a 33-year-old software engineer, who allegedly created a matrimony profile for his wife who lives abroad. Police said the accused created a profile believing that she would sign the divorce papers if she found a ‘better’ groom on the site.

The accused, identified as S Om Kumar from Velliyur village in Tiruvallur district, got married to a woman, 26, from the same village a few years ago and moved abroad.

The couple within a year of marriage, developed difference and Om Kumar left his job and returned to his hometown.

On September 17, Om Kumar’s father-in-law Padmanabhan received several calls from men saying they were interested in their daughter’s profile on the matrimony site. Subsequently he also received a call from the matrimonial site asking for a fee to be paid.

Since there was no such profile, Padmanabhan enquired and came to know that someone had created a fake profile in his daughter’s name.

Padmanabhan lodged a complaint at the Thiruvallur Cyber cell on September 30 and the number was traced to Om Kumar, who confessed to have created the profile. He was arrested on Tuesday.
