Tamil Nadu: Man dies as bike hits truck from behind

COIMBATORE: A 38-year-old man was killed and his son injured after his bike hit a container truck from behind on Ukkadam-Athupalam stretch here on Thursday night.

The west traffic investigation wing police said the incident occurred when S Shahjahan, a resident of Cheran Nagar at Karumbukadai was returning home after work with his son Mohammed Suhail, 13, on his bike on Ukkadam-Athupalam road around 11.45pm on Thursday.

A police officer said Shahjahan was employed with a fruit shop at Sowripalayam in the city. “When he neared the 19th pillar of a flyover under construction on the stretch, the container truck that was travelling in front of the bike with tea dust applied brake all of a sudden. Shahjahan couldn’t stop the bike, which hit the truck from behind. He, along with his son, was thrown off the bike in the impact of the collision.”

Shahjahan, the officer said, sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. “His son, however, escaped with injuries to his shoulders.”

When alerted, west traffic investigation wing police rushed Suhail to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where his condition was said to be stable. “His father’s body was also taken to CMCH for postmortem in the early hours of Friday. We have taken the container truck to the police station and registered a case against the truck driver, Christopher, 54, a native of Kerala,” the officer said.

The officer said Shahjahan’s body was handed over to the family members after the autopsy on Friday afternoon.
