Tamil Nadu logs 1,682 new Covid cases; 21 deaths

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 1,682 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday —a marginal increase from 1,647 on Tuesday and 1,661 cases it reported on Monday. At least 15 districts added more cases compared to their Monday tally.

The state added 21 deaths that pushed the toll since March 2020 to 35,400.

With 235 new cases, Coimbatore reported the highest number of cases on Wednesday. The western district reported 218 cases on Tuesday. It’s neighbours Salem and Erode reported the sharpest increase in the last 24 hours.

New cases in Salem went up from 77 on Tuesday to 98 on Wednesday. During the same time period cases in Erode rose to 130 from 112. In Tiruppur, cases went up to 101 from 85.

Chennai followed Coimbatore, with 198 cases. Besides Coimbatore, Chennai, Erode and Tiruppur, Chengalpet was the only district to report more than 100 cases.

Of the 21 deaths reported on Wednesday, there were three each in Chennai, Chengalpet and Thanjavur and two each in Erode, Thiruvarur and Ranipet.
