CHENNAI: The state’s preventive health scheme ‘Kalaignarin Varumun Kappom’ now includes free screening for cataracts, health minister Ma Subramanian said on Saturday.
“The centre has said that the state must provide free treatment under cataracts. Medical camps in the state cover 17 medical specialities. The state plans to organise at least 1,250 medical camps every year. Last year, 1,260 camps were held in which nine lakh persons benefited,” he said addressing doctors and postgraduate medical students at the 37th Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery convention - IIRSI 2022.
This year, TN has added cataract screening, which will be followed up with free cataract surgery. The aim of the camp is to detect cataracts early, prevent complications and vision loss and eventually have a cataract-free Tamil Nadu.
