CHENNAI: A woman duped an elderly woman and stole her gold chain near Tiruvallur on Saturday.
The victim Shanthi, 60, of Punnapakkam village was on her way to attend mass in a church when a young woman intercepted her.
She asked her whether she had pledged her gold jewellery in a bank, interest of which has been waived off as per a recent government order. She told Shanthi that she was a bank employee.
She boarded the woman on her bike and took her to Ekkadu where she asked her to remove her five-sovereign gold chain. Trusting her, Shanthi removed her chain and the accused wore the same.
She also told the woman to pose for a selfie. Within a couple of minutes of clicking a selfie on her mobile phone, the woman.
