CHENNAI: Thirumurthy, whose reprisal of the famous ‘Kannana Kanne’ in ‘Viswasam’ starring Ajit and Nayanthara, never thought he would get a chance to sing for police personnel who laid down their lives during duty. But, his rendition of the original Sid Sriram number went viral on social media and won him fame.
On Thursday, Police Commemoration Day, the visually challenged singer, woman constable R Sasikala of the Tiruvallur district police, who also penned it, and ‘Golden’ Nagaraja sang the number.
‘Veera Vanakakam, the video song created by the Tiruvallur police, was released by chief minister M K Stalin. District superintendent of police Varun Kumar, who came across the singer after he posted a video on his musical talent, offered him a chance to sing the song.
Music director Ghibran composed the song which was produced by Fifth Angle Studios following the announcement of a competition by director general of police C Sylendra Babu.
Singing is not new for Sasikala, the head constable who has been passionate about it since childhood and has penned many on creating awareness on child abuse, road safety and the corona virus.
“The competition to make positive campaign videos was announced by the DGP a week back. He had promised commendation and cash rewards for commissioners/superintendents who came up with the best video. The Tiruvallur team took it up seriously. It’s the culmination of the efforts of Ghibran’s music and the voices of Sasikala, Thirumurthy and Nagaraj,” said Varun Kumar.
The superintendent of police said the song had gone viral over the day and hoped it would stay popular for quite some years. “We hope to bag a prize. I have also invited personnel who are talented in other fields to approach so as to get them recognised for their talent,” he said.
Ghibran said he dedicated the video to police. “If not for the unconditional service of police, our lives wouldn’t have been the same.”
