Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution batting for 'fair tax devolution' from Centre

Chennai, Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday adopted a unanimous resolution seeking fair tax devolution to the state from the Centre in sync with the Constitutional principles of fiscal and cooperative federalism.

Finance Minister N Marie Wilson tabled the resolution seeking appropriate tax devolution to Tamil Nadu by the Union government from the taxes it collects.

The minister, referring to the state's contribution to the nation's economy, said fiscal federalism and cooperative federalism are the Constitution's basic principles.

Further, he said that the resolution emphasised the fair expectation that "every state, in accordance with its tax contribution and development requirements, must get a fair and equal share from central taxes".

The resolution, pointing to the principle of fiscal federalism, said a fair and equal tax devolution is essential to effectively fulfil the Constitutional obligations meant for the states.

DMK's Thangam Thenarasu moved an amendment and supported the resolution.

AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami spoke supporting the resolution.

Speaker JCD Prabhakar declared that the resolution was adopted unanimously.
