CHENNAI: Five suspects, including an AIADMK functionary, surrendered before a magistrate at Chengalpet court on Monday after a DMK man was murdered in public view at Broadway bus stand on Sunday.
They were identified as S Ganesh, his son Dineshkumar, and henchmen A Inbam, Fruity alias Karthik Ganapathy and A Kumaresan -- all hailing from Vyasarpadi.
The deceased Soundararajan, 34, was a native of Salem, and was running a juice shop near the bus stand at Washermenpet for about two decades.
Police said Ganesh and Soundararajan were functionaries in the AIADMK. However, the latter switched to the DMK after the state assembly elections. An enmity started between the two after the Soundararajan occupied a wall at the bus stand to make poll graffiti as the spot had been chosen by the AIADMK functionaries.
Meanwhile, a fight broke out between the two recently as Soundararajan set up a summer water stall for the public, at a location which again had been chosen by the AIADMK functionaries. The Esplanade police intervened and let them off with a warning.
Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, a bike-borne gang surrounded Soundararajan near the summer water stall and hacked him to death.
The Elephant Gate police who are investigating the murder have detained 10 suspects for interrogation.
