Tamil Nadu: 3 more Sri Lankan nationals arrive at Dhanushkodi

MADURAI: Three more Sri Lankan nationals fleeing the economic crisis in the island nation landed in Rameswaram island on Wednesday. They were identified as Jesintha Mary, 51, her 10-year-old son, from Thematta Kodai in Jaffna district and Aniston, 31, from Pesailai in Mannar district.

With this, the number of Sri Lankan people taking refuge in Tamil Nadu due to the economic crisis has touched 83. The Marine Police at Mandapam were informed of the arrival of the trio near Kothandaramar temple near Dhanushkodi.

The Lankan nationals were brought to Mandapam Marine police station for an inquiry and handed over to the Mandapam refugee camp after the formalities.

Sri Lankan nationals had started arriving in small groups since March 22 after the economic situation worsened in the neighbouring nation.

Most of those who landed in Dhanushkodi on illegal ferries belong to the east and the northern provinces of Sri Lanka. As many as 23 families have reached India and are lodged in the refugee camp at Mandapam. The Tamil Nadu government sent the first consignment of relief materials to Sri Lanka on May 18.
