CHENNAI: The number of new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu continued to decline with 1,538 fresh infections reported on Sunday. State health minister Ma Subramanian said 150 villages and tourist spots such as Tiruvannamalai, Velankanni, Nagoor and the Nilgiris will soon achieve 100% vaccination.
With another 5.48 lakh Covishield doses reaching Chennai airport on Sunday night, doses in stock crossed17 lakh and vaccination will proceed in the same pace and might cross 5 lakh vaccinations a day, he told reporters on Sunday.
Coimbatore, which reported the maximum number of cases once again (209), was the only district to have a TPR of above 2%. The western district has more than 2,000 active cases. Chennai, where cases increased slightly to 189 on Sunday compared to 182 the day before, has a TPR of 0.8%.
In the neighbouring district of Chengalpet, where fresh cases rose to 120 in the middle of last week, the count has started to drop with108 people tested positive on Sunday. Infection trend seems to be stable in most other TN districts including Madurai (12), Salem (56) and Trichy (57). As far as deaths were concerned, another 22 succumbed to the disease taking the toll to 17,322 — third highest in the country after Maharashtra (1,37,157) and Karnataka (37,278). Among the 22, three had comorbidities. TN’s case fatality rate hovered around 1.3% for the past three weeks.
More than 1.6 lakh samples are tested everyday and the state’s overall test positivity rate remains less than 1%.
On Sunday, 3.3 lakh people got their vaccines taking the total dose tally to 2.94 crore across the state so far.
