Tamil Nadu: 1 lakh seats in 143 govt colleges to be filled online

CHENNAI: In view of the ongoing pandemic, the directorate of collegiate education (DCE) is planning to conduct online admissions to fill more than one lakh seats in 143 government arts and science colleges like last year.

The directorate has gathered details such as allotted strength, admitted strength, popular courses and courses with fewer admissions from all colleges to prepare for online admissions.

As per the announcement by higher education minister K Ponmudi, admission to undergraduate courses will begin from August 1 after the declaration of CBSE and state board Class XII results. “The DCE is updating the website with details like new colleges and courses for 2021-22. Online applications will be user-friendly and students can fill in the details using their mobile phones,” sources said. Like last year, there will be a facilitation centre in each district to help the students.

Last year, around three lakh applications were received for 89,000 seats in government colleges. The government will conduct counselling for 41 university constituent colleges that have been converted into government colleges. So, there will be around 17,000 additional seats available this year.

Students are likely to be allowed to apply to any number of colleges and courses. But, they have to pay a processing fee for each college.

The admissions committee will send the details of applications to each course to the concerned college. The college admissions committee will prepare the rank list based on 69% reservation. Students will be intimated about the selection list and they will be admitted after verification of certificates.

“Students need to be allowed to choose a medium of instruction and shift to simplify the admission process. The state government also should think of conducting admissions at regional level to make the online admission process more efficient,” said T Veeramani, president of TN Government Collegiate Teachers’ Association .

Last year, colleges prepared rank lists for BA, BSc and BCom based on the marks scored on four subjects excluding languages. The rank list for BA Tamil was prepared based on Class XII Tamil marks and BA English literature was English marks.
