Tameside social services building targeted by arsonists

Police are investigating an arson attack on a social services building in Tameside.

The Denton Centre in Denton was torched in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to police, a window was smashed and some form of accelerant thrown through it.

The fire is understood to have been contained to one room on the ground floor.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 12.50am to Acre Street in Denton to reports of a fire involving a ground floor office premises.

"Crews were on scene for three hours.

"The cause of the fire is suspected deliberate ignition and an investigation is ongoing."

The building on Acre Street houses Tameside Council's Children's Area Social Work team and the Fostering and Adoption Social Work team.

Tameside Council added: "A fire in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Denton Centre, Acre Street, was fortunately contained to one room thanks to the quick response and work of the fire service.

"Police are currently investigating the cause and we will be supporting them with their investigation."
