Tameside man fined £1,000 for breaking quarantine to go to the pub

A Tameside man has been fined £1,000 for breaking quarantine rules after returning from abroad.

The holidaymaker, from Stalybridge, believed he could stop self-isolating early if he tested negative for Covid-19.

The man, who had recently visited a country not on the travel corridor list, took a coronavirus test and then went to the pub.

Police say he received a positive result for the virus shortly after.

He has since been issued with fixed penalty notice with a minimum fine of £1,000, GMP said.

In a post, police sergeant Jackson, of GMP Tameside North and East, said: “A male from the Stalybridge area has been issued with a fixed penalty notice for breaching quarantine rules after returning from a country from FCDO’s ‘all but essential travel’ list.

“The male has tried to circumvent the system and get a Covid test in hopes it would be negative and he could end his quarantine early.

“After the test, the male has gone to a public house. The results from his Covid test have then come back as positive. The male in question has been issued with a ticket with a minimum fine of £1,000.

“Behaviour like this puts the public at huge risk. Yes, there will be some of you out there saying we should be spending our time dealing with ‘real crimes’ but the reality is, this is what we have to deal with at the moment.

“If people abided by the rules, we would not have to police people breaking them.”
