Tame Impala has clinched an early victory at the music industry's most prestigious awards ceremony, with fellow Australian nominees losing out to stiff competition.

Pundits are tipping a three-way contest between Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar for the coveted best album prize at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.

Lamar leads the nominees, with nine overall nods to Lady Gaga's seven and Sabrina Carpenter's six.

The ceremony, held at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena, kicks off on Sunday night local time and Monday morning in Australia (11am AEDT).

Comedian Trevor Noah will host the awards for the sixth and final time, with musical performances by Justin Bieber, Tyler the Creator and Bruno Mars.

Perth act Tame Impala secured an early victory, taking home the best dance/electronic recording for End of Summer at the pre-telecast portion of the ceremony.

Creator Kevin Parker beat out big names, including collaborations between Disclosure and Anderson .Paak and Fred again.., Skepta and PlaqueBoyMax.

Parker took home the same prize last year for Neverender, his first ever Grammy victory from five nominations.

He will be the only Australian to take home a golden gramophone this year after fellow nominees were pipped at the post.

Sydney dance trio Rüfüs Du Sol's Inhale/Exhale lost out to FKA Twigs' Eusexua for best dance/electronic album.

Amyl and the Sniffers' U Should Not Be Doing That was also edged out for best rock performance, losing to Yungblud's Changes (Live from Villa Park) Back to the Beginning.

The Melbourne punk group faced stiff competition alongside performances by Linkin Park, Hayley Williams and Turnstile.

While the eyes of the world are on returning names like Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga, first-time nominees include PinkPantheress and actor Timothee Chalamet.

Chalamet is up for the best compilation soundtrack for visual media for the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

The red carpet was rolled out at 9am AEDT this morning, with Joni Mitchell, Sharon Osbourne and Olivia Dean strutting in style.

The ceremony will be exclusively streamed in Australia on Stan.
