Tame Impala wasted no time during its set at the Bud Light Stage at Lollapalooza, kicking things off with “Let It Happen,” one of the band’s most popular songs.
The massive crowd immediately took to the psychedelic sound of the group, compounded with similarly trippy visuals on the screens next to the stage.
The group played a steady stream of hits, with songs like “Elephant” moving the crowd to dance and sing along.
Early in the set, bandleader Kevin Parker thanked the crowd for watching the set. “You could’ve just seen Childish Gambino,” he said, in reference to the rapper’s simultaneous set across the park.
Parker may have spoken too soon. While the energy from the audience was high for the first half of the performance, there were noticeable gaps in the crowd towards the halfway mark. Some festival goers appeared to be rushing to the T-Mobile stage to catch Gambino’s set, with others appearing to attempt to beat the mad rush once the park closes at 10 p.m.
This didn’t appear to deter the group, however, with Parker and his backing band playing other hits like “The Less I Know the Better” and “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.”
At one point, Parker gave a shoutout to A$AP Rocky, dedicating “Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind?” to the incarcerated rapper.
“Get home safe, dude,” he said before the song began.
