Sekiwake Tamawashi pulled off a stunning victory over Yokozuna Hakuho, leaving them both with 10-2 records and keeping his hopes alive of winning a first career title, on the 12th day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on Thursday.
In the final bout of the day, Tamawashi, who at one point was turned completely around, fought back to push the Mongolian yokozuna out of the ring for his first win in 14 career meetings between them.
Sekiwake Takakeisho, No. 8 maegashira Kaisei and No. 9 maegashira Endo, who all have nine wins, also stayed alive in the title chase.
Takakeisho, winner of the previous Kyushu tournament in November, forced out No. 4 maegashira Kotoshogiku (4-8). Takakeisho will face Hakuho on Friday -- he has never beaten Hakuho in three previous career meetings.
Komusubi Mitakeumi, who beat three yokozuna in this tournament, forced out No. 1 maegashira Tochiozan (5-7) to notch his seventh win. He would likely have been among the leaders had he not missed three matches due to injury.
