In the final of the men's 10-meter platform diving, 14-year-old Rikuto Tamai came in seventh with 431.95 points.

He is the first Japanese diver to finish in the top eight in this event since Ken Terauchi ended up in fifth at the 2000 Sydney Games.

On Saturday at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, Cao Yuan of China won gold with 582.35 points. Cao previously took home the gold in the springboard event at the 2016 Rio Games.

Silver went to China's Yang Jian, who scored 580.40, while bronze went to Thomas Daley of Great Britain, who had 548.25 points.

--Calm, assured performance

Tamai said that by the platform diving final, he had gotten used to the atmosphere of the Games. With his calm and assured performance, it's hard to believe that he is only 14 and has become the first Japanese diver in this event to finish in the top eight in 21 years.

"I realized that I could show what I did in practice," Tamai said. "That gave me confidence."

In the preliminary round, he finished in 16th place to make the semifinal, where he finished eighth. His seventh-place finish in the final showed a steady progression in his points and ranking. Every time he performed, he increased his experience and grew up even more.

"I could perform as best as I could," he said, looking back on his first Olympics.

It seemed to be a meaningful competition in his life being exposed to the most tense atmosphere in the world.
