Tallaght Hospital asks patients not to attend A&E due to overcrowding

Tallaght University Hospital has reported they are ‘extremely busy’ and ‘under significant pressure’ today due to the high number of patients at its Emergency Department.

To deal with the overcrowding, the hospital is appealing to patients with non-emergency conditions to seek assistance from other parts of the health services. Apologising for the inconvenience caused, a spokeswoman for the hospital has said that patients who are presenting at the ED with non-urgent conditions are experiencing very long waiting times to be seen.

She said: “At the moment the Emergency Department (ED) is under significant pressure with many patients requiring admission due to a combination of factors. Where possible the hospital are asking patients with non-emergency conditions to seek assistance from other parts of the health service such as their local pharmacist, GP, GP out of hours service, or a local injury unit.”

The hospital has stressed however that any patient who needs emergency hospital care “will be seen” and it urged such patients not to delay attending the ED. TUH also reminded those attending the ED in an emergency to wear a mask, practise social distancing and to ensure that they tell the triage personnel if they have any signs or symptoms of Covid-19.

According to Trolley Ward Watch, there are currently 50 people waiting to be seen at the hospital’s emergency department. Meanwhile, according to the HSE’s system system known as ‘ TrolleyGar ’, which also shows how long the patients have been waiting, 23 of these patients have been waiting longer than 24 hours to be seen.

Currently, 383 patients are waiting in for emergency help nationwide. 205 of them have been waiting longer than nine hours.
