
Nagisa Sugiyama, 13, a junior high school student, hits a tennis ball against a 7.5-meter-high coastal levee in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, something she does almost every week when she goes with her grandfather to the fish market near the harbor. Before the levee was built to stop tsunamis like the one that followed the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sugiyama's family could see the ocean from their living room. Now what they see is the girl's huge concrete training partner.
