A towering kadomatsu, the traditional decorative bamboo and pine arrangement heralding the New Year, was installed at the entrance of the Ginza Six commercial complex in the Ginza district of Tokyo's Chuo Ward on Wednesday.

The 3.6-meter tall kadomatsu uses pine and straw in an Edomae style that eschews extravagance, was erected by members of the Nakamuragumi of the Edo Firemanship Preservation Association, which seeks to preserve the traditions and history of town fire brigades from the Edo period (1603-1867.)

"I want people to be able to see a traditional Japanese scene at New Year, and wish them all a happy year ahead," said one Nakamuragumi member.

The kadomatsu will be displayed through Jan. 7.
