TalkTalk to hike phone bills by £24 a year in January - but act now to avoid it

Thousands of TalkTalk customers will see their bills rise in line with new call charges from next month.

The telecoms giant said landline customers with its Unlimited UK Calls Boost plan will see their bill jump by £24 a year, adding to a string of New Year price hikes for customers.

The Unlimited UK Calls Boost plan allows TalkTalk customers to call standard UK landlines and mobiles at any time of day for no extra charge. It's the only package that's rising in January - but there is a way to avoid it.

The plan currently costs £12 a month, but that's rising to £14 a month on January 15 - adding £24 to annual bills.

All customers affected should have now been notified by phone, email or post, with customers given 30 days' notice.

However, if you cannot afford the increase, you can simply cancel the calls plan penalty-free.

That's because Unlimited UK Calls Boost is an add-on monthly plan, rather than a contract you're locked into.

"Our customers are using their landlines less and less in favour of online services such as WhatsApp and FaceTime, so to continue operating our Unlimited UK Calls Boost we've had to reassess our offering," a TalkTalk spokesman said.

If you find a cheaper deal, you have 30 days from the day you received confirmation from TalkTalk to cancel the booster.

However, if it's still one of the cheapest options for your usage, speak to the provider and try and haggle a more affordable option. Many suppliers are being generous with their plans at present due to the coronavirus pandemic, so if you're financially struggling, don't be afraid to ask for support.

Alternatively, anyone looking to cancel the plan can do so online via the TalkTalk website.

To opt out, choose 'My Services' from the toolbar, select 'Manage home phone boosts' from the dropdown menu and untick the relevant box. The changes will take effect immediately and be reflected in your next bill.
