Talks held as Chris Hughton set for return to management following Nottingham Forest exit

Cardiff City's pursuit of former Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton has taken another step.

Hughton was linked with the job last week having been out of work since he was relieved of his duties at the City Ground back in September.

The ex-Forest boss spent the best part of a year in the East Midlands but was let go after a dismal start to the Championship season.

He may not have to wait much longer for his next job, though, with his name already said to have been discussed in the Cardiff City boardroom.

Cardiff currently sit 21st in the league table, three places and six points below Forest.

Our sister title, WalesOnline, "understands the club's hierarchy could yet turn their attention to a candidate with real Championship experience in a bid to get things back on track.

"Chris Hughton is one of the names who has been mentioned in the Cardiff boardroom, while Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has also been floated."

Hughton's experience in the Championship is said to be key for Cardiff, who have built a track record of trusting experienced managers.

In recent years they have had the likes of Russell Slade, Neil Warnock and Neil Harris in charge - with Mick McCarthy relieved of his duties late last month.

Warnock, himself highly experienced in the Championship, got them promoted to the Premier League so they could be looking at Hughton to repeat the same trick.
