Talking Point: Will you stop wearing a face mask once it’s no longer mandated?

Health chiefs and Sadiq Khan have already expressed concerns over the plans

Environment Secretary George Eustice today said that compulsory mask wearing will likely cease on July 19.

Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, he said: “The plan is, and the Prime Minister has made clear, that it’s looking good at the moment to be able to do it on July 19, although we can’t make the decision until later. But yes... the legal requirement to have a face mask will be taken away.”

The new rules would apply to indoor public venues, although there may still be guidance to keep using masks on the Tube.

Health chiefs and Sadiq Khan have already expressed concerns over ending masks on public transport, not only for the potential risk to public health, but also for the sake of public confidence after research suggested many would be reluctant to use the Tube if others were not wearing masks.

Speaking on the matter, Eustice said: “There is a separate question, which is whether there may be some guidance that on certain settings like the Underground, it might make sense to still wear it — that it is obviously a judgment we will take at the time.”

But what are your thoughts on the matter? Would you keep wearing a mask regardless, or feel less confident if you knew others would not be required to wear a mask? Let us know in the comments for the chance to be featured on the ES website tomorrow.
