Talking Point: Will Boris Johnson’s planning reforms produce vital housing supplies or ‘destroy London’s suburbs?’

Boris Johnson was today urged not to enable the “destruction” of London’s suburbs as he faced backlash over proposed “Wild West” planning reforms.

Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East, has expressed concerns the reforms would deny local residents their say in developments going up in their area.

He told the Standard: “I and other MPs are picking up on the doorstep that people don’t want suburban London destroyed by blocks of flats going up that overshadow normal two or three-storey suburban houses.”

The backlash follows last week’s shock Tory defeat in the Chesham and Amersham by-elections, in which the proposals are believed to have been a key factor.

But what are your thoughts on the reforms? Do you think they will they produce vital housing supplies, or ‘destroy’ London suburbia? Let us know in the comments below to be featured on the ES website tomorrow.
