(Picture: PA Media)Since the harrowing details of Sarah Everard’s murder were revealed yesterday, there has been a rallying cry from the public demanding better protection for women and stronger action against police misconduct.
Wayne Couzens’s actions as a serving police officer were in particular focus, with Cressida Dick facing renewed pressure to resign amid a crisis of public trust.
Many have pointed to prior police failures, as it seems Couzens was not sufficiently investigated despite three previous reports of flashing.
Keir Starmer, amongst others, questioned: “How did he slip through the net? There were obviously warning signs, so how did he get through?
“I know that thousands upon thousands of police officers doing a fantastic job are absolutely sickened by this.
“How on earth did he get through the net is the critical question that has got to be answered.”
There are now calls for the law to be changed to properly protect women and girls.
