Talking Point: How do you feel about mandatory Covid passports?

Boris Johnson is facing a rebellion from ministers today over plans to introduce mandatory Covid passports.

The measures will affect entry to nightclubs, indoor venues of over 500 people, or outdoor settings with crowds over 4,000, with visitors required to show proof of two Covid jabs or a negative PCR or lateral flow test in the previous 48 hours.

Although the plans will pass owing to Labour support, the new rules have sparked clashes amongst backbench Tory MPs, with as many as 80 preparing to revolt.

Dominic Raab, Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, said: “I don’t think this is a big step or a slippery slope but I do understand the concerns and that’s why we should have a proper debate.

“Ultimately I think people should vote for these measures, which are a proportionate, targeted approach given what we don’t know and a precautionary approach we need to take temporarily while we get to grips with Omicron.”
