On the third anniversary of Britain’s divorce from the European Union, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has claimed the separation has enabled “huge strides” in the UK, despite experts cautioning economic damage caused by Brexit.

Mr Sunak described that the UK is confidently forging a new path as an “independent nation”.

He said: “In the three years since leaving the EU, we’ve made huge strides in harnessing the freedoms unlocked by Brexit to tackle generational challenges.

“Whether leading Europe’s fastest vaccine rollout, striking trade deals with over 70 countries, or taking back control of our borders, we’ve forged a path as an independent nation with confidence.”

However, the Government’s watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, has warned that Brexit will have a significant adverse impact on UK trade, reducing productivity and both exports and imports in the long run.

The Prime Minister’s spokesperson was asked whether Mr Sunak would be delivering a review assessing the economic impact of Brexit, to which he responded: “I’m not aware of any plans to publish anything along those lines this week.”

A poll conducted by Ipsos indicated that 45 per cent considered Brexit to be going worse than they expected, up significantly from 28 per cent in June 2021.
