Talking Point: How are you keeping cool in the heatwave?

The temperature on Tuesday exceeded 40C in the UK for the first time on record

Record temperatures are being reached as we continue through day two of this next level heatwave. Some are relishing a British summer where it’s hot every day and say to ‘take it in our stride’. Counterview: no.

This is a time for solutions if we are to make it to the promised land of rain showers and temperatures in the mid-20s on Wednesday.

How to dress is the obvious starting point, as we realise how limited our summer wardrobe options are, especially if aiming to maintain some decency in public. Trust the sartorial experts saying bowling shirts and sandals are an acceptable look and click next-day delivery before you start to doubt pulling it off. Or forget fashion – ‘ice jackets’ being worn by the Lionesses after training sound appealing, however less strenuous our own activities may be.

According to retailers, we’ve been throwing money at the problem to cool down. Fans, ice creams, paddling pools, and… burgers? Barbecuing up an extra source of heat sounds rather counterproductive, but something something Great British Summer.

And so to bed. Choose the right material for your sheets, consider taking a hot cold water bottle with you, and open up your windows (providing you can sleep through any street noise of Londoners losing their minds.)

It will be Wednesday soon, and it will be warm – but not this warm.

How are you keeping cool in the heatwave? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below for the chance to be featured on the ES website.
