(Picture: PA Wire)Rishi Sunak defended Government tax hikes in his first in-person speech to the Tory conference today.
Letting debt pile up for future generations was “immoral,” said the Chancellor, standing by his strategy to restore public finances after £370 billion worth of spending during the pandemic.
“Just borrowing more money and stacking up bills for future generations to pay is not just economically irresponsible, it is immoral.
“Yes, I want tax cuts. But in order to do that our public finances must be put back on a sustainable footing.”
“I believe that mindless ideology is dangerous. I care about what works, not about the purity of any dogma,” he added, before emphasising his belief that the “only sustainable route out of poverty comes from having a good job.”
