Talking Point: Are you excited about getting on the Elizabeth line?

Happy passengers finally get to ride on the Elizabeth line

After all the delays, build-up and anticipation, Crossrail is finally here – and some Elizabeth line enthusiasts couldn’t wait a minute longer to check out their sweet new ride.

Impatient commuters (is there any other kind?) could be found queueing outside of stations to be the first to tap in.

An estimated 130,000 journeys were made in the first 3½ hours and, according to TfL commissioner Andy Byford, “the universal reaction is ‘wow’”.

Meanwhile, Sadiq Khan has talked up how “speedy, spacious, silent, comfortable” passengers will find the new service, and challenged anyone to “get off a Crossrail train without a spring in their step.”

“Londoners have travelled across the city to get the first train – that’s the excitement that this engenders,” the mayor said.

Just to be clear, that’s taking a trip out of their way, just to take another trip. Who remembers the last time you took a detour due to a line closure or delayed service, and doing so with a ‘spring in your step’?

Once the honeymoon period – or should that be ‘purple patch’ – is over, the Elizabeth line will be just another way of getting from A to B. Until then, perhaps we should take this chance to get on board with all the excitement.
