Wednesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
Perth hosts a very decent summer jumps card on Wednesday and Bless The Wings (3.10) is the best bet of the day at the Scottish track. The selection was third to Kilbree Kid over course and distance last month and at the revised weights has obvious prospects of reversing the form this afternoon.
At Worcester, Joe Farrell (3.20) is worthy of support in the National Hunt Flat race. He has the form to go well against this opposition and is likely to be suited by the fast surface prevalent at the course.
Kodicil (4.00) is an interesting runner at a fair price in the staying handicap at Thirsk. He has spent more time over jumps than on the Flat recently, with starts over both hurdles and fences and only one run on the level since a victory off a mark of 65 at Ripon last year. That outing was a disappointment, and not one that can be written off simply because the ground was heavy as he has performed well with cut over jumps in the past, but he has since put up another fair run over timber and there are no question marks over his ability to see out the trip. The same is not true of several of the market leaders, and at around 10-1, he is worth a close look.
The featured sprint may give Rex Imperator (4.30) a chance to register his first success for David O’Meara. He lost his way after recording an emphatic success in the Stewards’ Cup in 2013 but looked like a Group-class sprinter at Goodwood and has suggested in a couple of recent outings that the switch to O’Meara’s stable is starting to work its magic.
At Bath this evening, Eastern Magic (7.35) could get off the mark for Ben Case at the second attempt. He was strongly supported when returning from a six-month break at this track last time out and was closing all the way to the line before going down by a short head. It was not a strong race, but his contest tonight does not have much strength in depth either and any improvement for the run will take him close.

This week’s prize is a pair of Premier enclosure tickets to July Cup day at Newmarket a week on Saturday, 11 July, day three of Newmarket’s Moet & Chandon July Festival. Apparently, there is also “ plenty of fun for all ages in the family enclosure including swingboats, inflatables, garden games and a face painter”, to say nothing of live music and dancing after the last. If you don’t win, you can buy tickets here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -6.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
