10.45am Turner will return to race-riding at Newmarket
Tony Paley: Hayley Turner, the most successful British female jockey ever, will returns to race-riding at Newmarket on Friday evening as part of her preparation for the Shergar Cup at Ascot next month.
Turner, who retired at the end of last season, will ride Clenymistra for trainer Marco Botti and owners Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar in the Colchester Cancer Centre Campaign Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
“The owners have been good to me and I asked their racing manager Tony Nerses if he had anything to throw my way,” Turner told At The Races.
“I’m getting as fit as I can at home, but race-riding always helps. I’ve been riding out at lot at home, but a couple of steady canters up Warren Hill doesn’t challenge you that much. I need to have two or three rides before I have my comeback officially at the Shergar Cup.
“James Fanshawe and Sheikh Fahad have said I could ride one of theirs in a couple of weeks, Landwade Lad, this morning. I spoke to Conor Dore the other day and he said I could ride Desert Strike when he runs. The more rides I get the better. As I feel at the moment, I’m happy just to come back for the Shergar Cup. It’s a fun day and I’m really excited about it.”
Wednesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
There was 3mm of rain at Sandown Park on Tuesday but the forecast is largely dry ahead of an interesting meeting at the track tonight where El Hayem (7.40) should make a successful step up to handicap company after his unexpected win in a maiden at Doncaster last month.
El Hayem was a 25-1 chance there having finished fourth of five behind Taqdeer - a winner off 87 on his only subsequent start - on his debut at Chelmsford in April. There was no fluke about his win, however, and the form has since been franked by several of those who followed El Hayem home. The ratings suggest he might have a pound or two to find with Sir Roderic, but Rod Millman’s runner is much more exposed and normal progress should be enough to put Sir Michael Stoute’s colt in front tonight.
Bryght Boy (6.35) is still a maiden after five starts but was finishing strongly when third in his latest race at Lingfield and will appreciate the stiff uphill finish at Sandown.
Sir Mark Prescott’s yard is beginning to hit top form with three winners from his last 10 starters and Mystique Heights (8.40) should be another, while the stable’s Red Box (3.00) looks like the best bet on the card at Lingfield. She was a good second in Listed event at Carlisle last time and has more scope for improvement than the four-year-old Afjaan, her main rival in the market.
At Yarmouth, Frank Bridge (8.20), who looks to have plenty in his favour in his bid to complete a hat-trick, is the best bet on the card. The move to Eve Johnston Houghton’s yard has triggered a revival in form and the step back up in trip to a mile should suit.

This week’s prize is a pair of tickets to Ascot to see the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday 23 July. Our most prestigious all-aged Flat race could bring together Postponed and Hawkbill this time. The tickets, generously offered by the Queen’s track, are for the Winning Post Enclosure, which, as the name suggests, will get you very close to the action. If you don’t win, you can buy tickets here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today but you will start on -6.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
