Talking Horses: Tuesday’s best bets plus the latest racing news

Tuesday’s best bets, by John O’Hara

Frankie Dettori, who is not known for making wasted journeys, even if they are short ones, heads east from Newmarket to Yarmouth today for one ride. He teams up with John Gosden in the nursery to ride Cartago (2.50), who was a very easy winner at Windsor last time. He won with a fair bit in hand on that occasion and still looks ahead of the handicapper.

Earlier on the card, Roger Varian’s Fourth Way (2.20) is banker material judged on an encouraging debut. Varian’s have needed their first runs this season, but it would be a surprise if this horse couldn’t go in at the second time of asking.

If ratings are anything to go by then Music Master (4.20) looks past the post. He is a superior animal to anything else in the race and with Henry Candy’s team running so well he looks a good thing.

Finally up at Catterick, Edgar Balthazar (4.30) is on top of his game at the moment and Keith Dalgleish’s charge looks to have strong each-way claims.

Tipping competition, day two

Our winners so far:

Monday

Spending Time 9-2

Great Expectations 12-1

Perfect Pastime 9-1

And our leader is ...

Copshaw +12.50

… who had the only day one double, with Perfect Pastime and Spending Time. Five people had Great Expectations and pursue him on +10.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.10 Chepstow, 3.30 Catterick, 3,45 Carlisle.

This week’s prize is a copy of Paul Ferguson’s newly published Jumpers To Follow 2015-16, since we’re approaching the core jumps season. Now in its ninth year, the annual focuses on Ferguson’s 40 best prospects, with many additional features and a foreward from the trainer Jamie Snowden. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
