Tuesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
The opening race at Huntingdon is the first of several interesting puzzles on the card, as Camborne, another classy recruit from the Flat to the John Ferguson stable, is a Group Three winner on the level but could well prove to be a false favourite at around 13-8.
Camborne also had the class to win the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting in 2013 off a mark of 108, but his form on the Flat tailed off this year, and he seemed to be developing a dubious attitude to the game too.
If hurdling can rekindle anything close to his best form on the Flat, he will be hard to beat today, but his very best was now quite some time ago and Younevercall (1.10), who consistently jumped to the right on his hurdling debut at Uttoxeter but still managed to win quite comfortably, could be the way to go. This track should certainly suit and he has plenty of scope to improve.
Notnowsam (2.40) has progressed and jumped well in his two chase outings to date and can take the card’s valuable novice handicap chase off bottom weight, while Ferguson’s Ruacana (2.10) has a solid chance in the preceding handicap hurdle, which is worth £25,000. At Wolverhampton, Soldier In Action (5.40) is an obvious choice for the maiden but a fair price at around 6-4 too.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 2.10 Huntingdon, 2.40 Huntingdon, 3.00 Lingfield.
This week’s prize, in celebration of three days at Cheltenham at the end of this week, is a copy of WINNER: My Racing Life, the new book from the pen of AP McCoy, who used to ride a bit, as the more senior among you will recall. Billed as “the complete story of his astonishing career”, WINNER allows the 20-times champion jump jockey to reflect on his exploits in the saddle as well as discussing the more private side of being AP. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
Good luck!
