1pm James Doyle keen on Brazen Beau for the July Cup
Tony Paley: Jockey James Doyle is set to partner Australian contender Brazen Beau for the first time in the July Cup at Newmarkey on Saturday week as the colt now sports the blue colours of Godolphin.
Doyle rode Brazen Beau in a piece of work on the July Course on Tuesday morning, cantering two furlongs before picking up the pace for the last four furlongs.
Doyle said: “He didn’t do anything too searching, we just wanted to let him have a feel of the track. I let him quicken up at the two pole he ran into the dip and changed his legs, he levelled up perfectly and he hit the line nicely. He’s got a great temperament and is really relaxed. He handled it well and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else.”
While Doyle has plenty of confidence in Brazen Beau, he rates the Commonwealth Cup winner Muhaarar as a major danger. He added: “I suppose Charlie Hills’ horse, if he runs, would be a big danger as he looks a particularly exciting horse.”
Tuesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
It will be a blistering afternoon on top of the hill above Brighton, and the sea view from the bar directly above the winning post should be magnificent. The action down below is a little less inspiring - though it would be interesting to know the story behind the naming of Sociopath, a runner in the maiden - but Duke Street (4.00) looks likely to make the running in the 12-furlong handicap and it is difficult to see what is likely to get past him.
To The Sky (4.30) was a winner over fences last time out but he has some form on the Flat too and returns to the level on a basement mark of 47. He was racing off 105 at Newton Abbot last time out so could have something to spare here, while Riptide (8.10) produced his best run of the season at Pontefract last time out and will go close if he can run to a similar level today.

This week’s prize is a pair of Premier enclosure tickets to July Cup day at Newmarket a week on Saturday, 11 July, day three of Newmarket’s Moet & Chandon July Festival. Apparently, there is also “ plenty of fun for all ages in the family enclosure including swingboats, inflatables, garden games and a face painter”, to say nothing of live music and dancing after the last. If you don’t win, you can buy tickets here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
