Tuesday’s best bets, by Tony Paley

All roads lead to Paris. If you’re going for the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe this weekend and fancy eating at a traditional, no-frills, rustic brasserie then I can heartily recommend the Polidor restaurant on the Left Bank. Le Comptoir du Relais is another eaterie worth the trip on the Metro. Those, I can assure you, will be the best tips you will get from me today.

The turf Flat racing at Ayr is a minefield this afternoon. I am not selecting him this time around (wrong trip and no hood today) but I will be keeping a close eye on Mass Rally, the top weight in the 5.00 at the Scottish track. This Michael Dods-trained gelding is thrown in on his old form and the time he tackles a fast-run race over six furlongs on a track with a bit of cut (and the hood back on) will be the time to step in.

Wolverhampton’s all-weather meeting is more manageable and it will be disappointing if San Quentin (8.40) can’t get his head in front in division one of the 12-furlong handicap and follow up his success over track and trip last time out a fortnight ago. The selection was given a 4lb rise in the ratings for that clear-cut success and that doesn’t look enough to stop the grey gelding going in again.

The Richard Fahey team would win with the stable cat at present and the in-form yard can register another success with Theos Lolly (6.10), whose placed efforts at Pontefract and Ayr read well in this company. Sky Cape (6.40) is another with an obvious favourite’s chance on the Dunstall Park card. Charlie Appleby’s progressive runner was well supported on his handicap debut at Chelmsford last time out and is confidently expected to go one better this time.

Tipping competition, day two

Our winners so far:

Monday

Jigsaw Financial 5-1

Scots Fern 6-1

Regal Ways 13-2

And our leader is …

royal1scot +10.50

… who had Jigsaw Financial and Regal Ways, putting him 50p ahead of donlewis, who had Jigsaw Financial and Scots Fern.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.40 Sedgefield, 4.05 Southwell, 5.00 Ayr.

This week’s prize is a copy of the Racing & Football Outlook Jumps Guide 2015, currently at the printers and expected in plenty of time for the Charlie Hall. It’s packed with its usual features, stats and expert views and can be purchased here if you don’t happen to win a copy.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
