Tuesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
Epsom and Goodwood are two of the most high-profile tracks in the country, but it is difficult to spin their cards this afternoon as anything other than a little disappointing. At Goodwood, which is staging its fourth meeting in five days, the action is particularly thin, with every favourite bar one at 15-8 or shorter overnight. Soft ground does not help, but this still looks like at least one card too far.
Bobby Wheeler (3.45) might offer a little value in the three-runner Peter Willett Conditions Stakes, and Black Caesar likewise at 10-1 in the sprint handicap, but Epsom looks marginally more attractive and Mishghar (4.10) is possibly the best bet on the card. He is still a maiden after five races, but produced his best form to date when third on the all-weather at Lingfield last time out and does not need to find much on the overall standard of his form to beat the ones with winning form.
Harlequin Striker (3.35) could get the race run to suit him earlier on the card, while The Carbonator (4.30) is an interesting runner from Ireland on the card at Hamilton. His stablemate Fragile Earth (4.00) might just have been included in the horsebox as a bet to nothing, but has bits of form to suggest he is not the forlorn outsider of three that the prices suggest.
Tipping competition - a new week
Congratulations to JimmyDeuce, who won last week’s competition on a final score of +26.38, having picked Eccleston (5-1) and Polarisation (3-1) on Friday. He won by daylight from Carl Jones (+16.50), with erifder (+14.50) a strong-finishing third, thanks to Cool Bahamian (16-1).
This week’s prize is a pair of County enclosure tickets to Doncaster for the St Leger a week on Saturday, on 12 September, kindly offered by the racecourse. If you don’t win, you can buy tickets to any of the four days of the Leger festival here.
To kick things off, we’d like your selections, please, for these races: 3.05 Epsom, 3.15 Goodwood, 5.05 Hamilton.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
