Talking Horses: Tuesday’s best bets plus the latest racing news

Tuesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood

A couple of quite valuable Class 2 handicaps are the feature events on the card at Leicester this afternoon, though the five-furlong event is rather less competitive than it could be, thanks to the presence of Maljaa (3.50) in the field. Roger Varian’s runner arrives on the back of three straight wins off marks of 93, 98 and 102 and, though he is now up to 107, his latest success at Haydock last month suggested that there is more improvement to come. It will be a surprise if his next start is in a handicap.

The earlier seven-furlong contest is more open, but there is not a lot of obvious pace in the race apart from Hillbilly Boy (3.20). He was third in the Silver Cup at Ayr last time out and, while that is over six furlongs, he has shown in the past that he stays today’s trip. It is easy to see him getting a soft lead and he will take some pegging back if so.

Revolutionist (6.40) and Zzoro (7.10) are two to think about on the evening card at Wolverhampton, the former in particular making plenty of appeal as he attempts to follow up an easy win at Windsor last time. Mark Johnston’s runner powered clear to win by nearly four lengths there, having not seen a racecourse for seven months, and has just a 6lb penalty to shoulder today.

Trafalgar Rock (4.00) and Pea Shooter (4.30) are the picks on the card at Musselburgh, while Verano (3.40) is the most interesting runner over the jumps at Huntingdon.

… who all had Deeds Not Words AND Ghinia. Among the eight others who had Deeds Not Words and are chasing on +6 is last week’s winner, TL127. Form!

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 3.20 Leicester, 4.10 Huntingdon, 4.30 Musselburgh.

This week’s prize is a copy of the newly published Chasers & Hurdlers annual from Timeform, a hefty tome that is treasured by fans of the winter game and, at £75, is one of the most valuable prizes we ever offer on here. This year’s volume contains an appreciation of Tony McCoy’s career as well as reflections on SP over-round for the Grand National (“scandalous” says Timeform) and the length of time the BHA takes over corruption cases. If you don’t win this week, you can buy a copy here or read a sample here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.

Good luck!
