Tuesday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
Midweek jumping will inevitably be a little low-key in the run-up to Cheltenham in just a fortnight, but there are a few interesting and competitive races at Lingfield this afternoon, the six-furlong handicap at 2.40 in particular.
Hoofalong is the likely favourite here after an excellent run under a penalty at Wolverhampton last week and has been in the form of his life so far this winter. He is also 2lb lower in the weights, but steps back up to six furlongs today and that could make him vulnerable to Apache Storm (2.40).
Mick Appleby’s filly has also been in decent form in recent weeks without managing to get her head in front, but has looked ready for a return to this trip several times already this year and is a very fair price at around 10-1 to make it count.
Ask The Guru (4.40), a course-and-distance winner from a 7lb higher mark last season, also looks poised for a first victory of the current campaign, while at Catterick, Vinny Gambini (4.30) has shown enough in a couple of recent races to suggest he is a decent price for the novice handicap chase.
Carthage (3.00) also has obvious claims on the same card, while the useful Twirling Magnet (3.20) will be hard to beat in the open hunter chase at Leicester.
Tipping competition, day two
Our winners so far:
Monday
Planetoid 16-1
Kilbree Chief 4-1
Lord Of The Storm 16-1
And our leaders are …
Lindsey6677 +19
Mulldog +19
… who both had the first two winners of the week. It was a high-scoring Day One with no fewer than nine other people now on +14, having had one or other of the 16-1 winners.
Today’s, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 4.30 Catterick, 4.50 Leicester, 5.00 Catterick.
For one final week, thanks again to 32Red bookmakers, we can offer another £25 ante-post bet on any race (for which betting is available) at this year’s Cheltenham Festival. You can see 32Red’s Cheltenham markets here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -3.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
Good luck!
