Thursday’s best bets, by Greg Wood

Not much catches the eye at Wincanton, where three of the favourites are likely to go off at evens or below, but Spending Time (2.00) is worth a small interest to follow up his successful debut over fences at Huntingdon last time out.

David Pipe’s six-year-old has not looked entirely straightforward in the past, and was hanging right for much of the race at Huntingdon too, but he won readily enough in the end has youth on his side. At around 13-8, it is worth taking a chance that he is still getting better, as few of his opponents have similar scope for improvement.

At Kempton, Candyman Can (5.40) will take plenty of beating in the 12-furlong handicap. Willie Musson’s five-year-old has been very lightly raced to date, and was making only his second start since February 2014 when successful here last month. A 5lb rise is modest given likely improvement and he should be able to follow up.

Aldeburgh (6.10), a course-and-distance winner, could offer some value against the favourite Oceanographer in the next, while Lightsome (5.10) can take a competitive maiden earlier on the card.

This week’s prize is a copy of the Racing Post Annual 2016, featuring 208 colour pages of the best writing and photography from racing’s daily paper. The blurb promises “ the moments to treasure and unusual stories of the year, plus a look forward at the top prospects for 2016”. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -9.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.

Good luck!
