10.45am Hannon retires Tiggy Wiggy after Sprint Cup run
Tony Paley: The leading juvenile of 2014, Tiggy Wiggy, has been retired to the paddocks after finishing last in Haydock’s Betfred Sprint Cup last weekend.
Last year she won six of her eight races, culminating in victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes in September. She finished an excellent third in the 1,000 Guineas in May but has disappointed in the Commonwealth Cup and then at Haydock, following which connections have decided to call time on her career.
“We spoke with the owners and the decision has been taken to draw stumps. She was a fantastic two-year-old and gave us so many magical days, but it never happened for her this summer,” Hannon told http://www.richardhannonracing.co.uk.
“However, Tiggy Wiggy owed us nothing - we said through the winter that if she never won again it would not matter a jot as she had done us proud - and now she can look forward to a new career.
“She’ll be let down and will come under the hammer at the end of the year, but she will make a fantastic broodmare for someone. We’ll all miss her as she was so popular - she wasn’t always the easiest, but she got better with age.”
Thursday’s best bets, by Greg Wood
Tony McCoy put several hundred on the gate for the first day of the St Leger meeting yesterday, but the action really kicks off with Ladies’ Day this afternoon. It will feel as though the world and his or her partner have all turned up at Town Moor, to party on the basis that we might all be dead tomorrow.
Funding the whole exercise is another question, with only one odds-on chance on the card and the favourite for five of the eight races at 7-2 or bigger overnight. Gin In The Inn (3.40) is worth a second look at 16-1 in the valuable sales race, as he travelled like a decent horse at Pontefract last time but went for home a few strides too soon. Today’s test is very different and far more competitive, but Richard Fahey’s colt has talent and might get more of a tow into the thick of the action today.
Toe The Line (3.05) is interesting is the Park Hill Stakes on the back of her fourth place behind Litigant in the Ebor Handicap at York last month. There is little else to tie her into the domestic form, but that was a strong performance in one of the most competitive handicaps of the year and gives her a better chance than the 8-1 overnight quotes suggest.
Nemoralia (1.55) is shorter at 7-4, but has something in hand of her field even on the bare form of her win at Kempton last time out. Savannah Beau (6.00) is a fair price in a ridiculously competitive sprint at the end of the afternoon, while course-and-distance winner Bakht A Rawan (2.40) is the pick on the card at Epsom.
