Today’s best bets, by Chris Cook

Just possibly this one will end up in the file marked ‘Good money after bad’ but I have to have another go with Andhaar (3.05) at Musselburgh today. A handicap hurdler from the Nick Alexander yard, happily back among the winners this autumn, Andhaar won easily at Kelso last month and, to these eyes, ought to have followed up two days later at Ayr.

The nine-year-old travelled beautifully through that race but was sent for home rather earlier than was strictly necessary, considering he was stepping up in trip, and he became a sitting duck for the favourite’s late challenge. Oh well.

The winner has since won again and the pair were clear that day. Andhaar is up in the weights but still a stone and a half below his career peak rating and, having had a break of 10 days this time, may well be ready to score once more. He’s 11-4.

Pick of the card at Chelmsford may be Lovely Memory (6.15), a Godolphin filly who broke her maiden here in September and should appreciate the extra quarter-mile, having got going a bit late here last time. She’s 4-1.

This week’s prize is a copy of Beckhampton, The Men And Horses of a Great Racing Stable, Paul Mathieu’s newly published book about the Wiltshire stable now home to Roger Charlton, which has housed some 40 Classic winners in its long and successful history. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -9.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.

Good luck!
