Today’s best bets, by Greg Wood
After two very memorable days at four different tracks, a return to more pedestrian racing at Brighton, Wolverhampton and Stratford is a shock to the system, but it cannot all be electrifying and there is an eight-furlong handicap lurking on the card at Wolverhampton that demands at least a little attention.
The market revolves around Hakka, the winner of two of his last three starts, who opened his account in handicap company at Chelmsford last time with a half-length defeat of Mitraad.
He is up 6lb in the weights as a result, however, and was perhaps a little fortunate to emerge in front at all given how the race developed. Heisman (4.40) was only fourth last time out, but in a decent race at Ascot, and has more appeal than the favourite at around 9-2. Several runners from his last start have performed with credit since and he surely has a race at today’s level in him.
Fanny Again (4.10) is a fair price for the 12-furlong handicap on the same card, and Alektios (4.30) and Kings Concerto (3.30) both have solid chances on the card at Brighton. The jumps meeting at Stratford is competitive too, Cousin Khee (4.50) may be the best bet on the card.
Tipping competition – a new week
Congratulations to spudpwt, who completed a fantastic week with a sixth winner in Turret Rocks, landing last week’s competition unchallenged on a final score of +25.50.
This week’s prize is a copy of Paul Ferguson’s newly published Jumpers To Follow 2015-16, since we’re approaching the core jumps season. Now in its ninth year, the annual focuses on Ferguson’s 40 best prospects, with many additional features and a foreward from the trainer Jamie Snowden. If you don’t win, you can buy a copy here.
To kick things off, we’d like your selections, please, for these races: 3.50 Stratford, 5.00 Brighton, 5.30 Brighton.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
