Monday’s best bets, by Chris Corrigan
It is to be hoped that Manners Please (6.05) is not determined to live up to his name on this, his second outing, at Thirsk tonight. When he made his debut at Salisbury 11 days ago, he seemed to insist “after you” to the other runners, dawdling from the stalls and giving his rivals half a dozen lengths’ start.
Ralph Beckett’s two-year-old displayed more inexperience during that debut race but eventually finished well to claim fifth place, without being knocked about on the fast surface.
Today’s ground at Thirsk promises to be more suitable for a horse with his soft-ground pedigree. Beckett has a remarkably high strike-rate with the few runners he sends to this Yorkshire track. Manners Please is on offer at 7-4.
At Carlisle, Monaco Rose (5.15) has been a little frustrating for Richard Fahey but some lines of form from his Chester races make him, at 11-2, a value alternative to Sir Mark Prescott’s Cartwright, a short-priced morning favourite.
Tipping competition – a new week
Congratulations to 23skidoo, who wiped out any chance of his being caught by picking a brace of 5-1 winners on Friday for a final score of +32.50. Congratulations, sir! We’ll be in touch by email.
This week’s prize, kindly offered by Ayr racecourse, is a couple of Club enclosure tickets to Ayr Gold Cup day on Saturday 17 September. It’s the climax of Scotland’s biggest and richest flat race meeting and always hugely enjoyable. If you don’t win, you can read more about it and buy tickets here.
To kick things off, we’d like your selections, please, for these races: 4.30 Brighton, 7.05 Thirsk, 8.20 Kempton.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
