Monday’s best bets, by Chris Corrigan
Rio Ronaldo (7.30), who contests the day’s most valuable race at Windsor, was popular with early-odds punters on Sunday night and his general price dropped from 5-1 to 4-1.
Unless those odds contract further, Mike Murphy’s well-drawn sprinter still looks worth siding with - he is a three-times winner on ground good or faster at Windsor, once at 5f and twice over Monday’s distance of 6f. The only occasion Rio Ronaldo has been been beaten at the banks-of-the-Thames venue was on soft going. And he still finished second.
A cautionary note is that the four-year-old is 7lb higher than for his latest victory. But Rio Ronaldo finished with an eye-catching run when fifth of 15 in a £28,000 5f handicap at Ascot on his latest outing, last month. Murphy could well be singing “Down By The Riverside” on his way back to his Bedfordshire stables.
The final race at Thirsk has a women riders’ handicap and Emma Sayers is well positioned to pounce with Gaelic Wizard (5.45) from a handy stands-side draw.
Tipping competition - a new week
Congratulations to BearRides, who swooped dramatically to seize last week’s prize by picking Ravenous (25-1) on Friday for a final score of +17.50, enough to beat Ormrod76 (+14.60), who had Friday’s other winners, including a 10-1 shot. Congratulations, BearRides, we’ll be in touch by email about your prize.
This week’s prize, generously offered by BetVictor, is a £50 bet, this being a special week of horse racing, with the Ebor meeting to start on Wednesday.
To kick things off, we’d like your selections, please, for these races: 3.45 Thirsk, 4.00 Chelmsford, 5.15 Thirsk.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
