Talking Horses

After three runs in maiden races at Grade One tracks, Lake Kalamalka (2.40) has her sights lowered for the nursery handicap at Yarmouth today. John Dunlop, her trainer, won this race with a 67-rated juvenile a few years back and Lake Kalamalka gets in here off a handy mark of 66. There has been little support for her in the morning exchanges, which is a bit disconcerting, but for me Lake Kalamalka has shown enough promise to warrant an interest at this level.
Kossack (4.10) could be well handicapped in the 14-furlongs handicap at Yarmouth. A full brother to the St Leger winner Milan, Luca Cumani's colt very much caught the eye when runner-up at Leicester on his third start and went on to win by six lengths at Ripon.
It was a bit of a shock to see The Cayterers (7.50) put in at 66-1 for the six furlongs handicap at Great Leighs in the Racing Post betting forecast. He is trading around 12-1 and is interesting on his first start for Tony Carroll. Sadly, the gelding's former trainer, Milton Bradley, seems to have lost the plot and any horse leaving his yard is worth checking out. The Cayterers is more than capable of winning this if back to anything like his old form.
